History & Purpose
The Evansville Retired Teachers Association (ERTA) is composed of retired teachers from the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation and other corporations who associate together to renew the friendships of their teaching years.
From its early beginning in 1952 through 2008 one thread of unanimity continues to weave through the leadership of ERTA. It is focused dedication to the teaching profession and the continued interest in education which manifests itself through retirees.
As ERTA members through the years have gathered together at structured meetings as their enthusiasm has never wavered, but rather strengthened. All around us we approach the year 2008, we have seen other organizations falter. Attendance and interest have declined, but our group has sustained a somewhat steady course.
There is a role for every member to fulfill. Perhaps it is just attending our meetings, socializing with familiar faces and making new friends. But that is important! Others may with to volunteer to serve on standing committees, or maybe show an interest in assuming a position on the Executive Board.
Quoting from our ERTA bylaws the objectives of our organization are:
1. To promote the social and economic welfare of retired teachers.
2. To encourage the unity and cooperation of retired teachers.
3. To maintain an active interest in the public schools and institutions of higher learning.
4. To continue interest and participation in the economic and political life of our community.
